| An Introduction To African Musical Instruments |
|
|
Music is an important part of life and culture on the continent of
Africa. It plays a large role in births, marriage and hunting rituals.
The African music scene in both traditional folk music and modern
popular music is vibrant.
There is no such thing as African music and instruments in
general because different musical forms have developed in the regions
of this continent. Instruments, such as guitars, trumpets, saxophones
and pop music have been introduced by Europeans. Music in Africa also
has been influenced by the United States and Britain.
The large variety of African musical instruments has contributed to the continent’s rich musical heritage. This heritage can be found in Africa’s work songs and songs for religious ceremonies, as well as African worship music.
The different kinds of African drums continue to be one of the most important parts of African sounds. Drums lay down the rhythm for the other African musical instruments.
The famous Djembe drums are one of the many kinds of African drums. This instrument grew out of the tradition of talking drums. Djembe drums are used to communicate messages in remote areas and for religious ceremonies.
Slit Gongs, which are made from one hollowed log is just one of the many kinds of Djembe drums. African musical instruments can also be considered works of art in addition to their practical function. For instance, the basketwork which goes into the making of African rattles is very impressive.
Other African musical instruments include the Double Bell, which is used as the rhythm accompaniment to drums in the Western part of Africa. This instrument is hand made from iron cowbells and gives two musical tones.
The Kora, a harp like instrument made from cowhide, is also one of the popular West African musical instruments. It has twenty-one strings, which are plucked. The Mbira is used in ritual, dance and story telling. It is an unusual instrument with keys, which are played by the thumbs.
African musical instruments contribute greatly to the cultural life in the Dark Continent. The history of African music is rich. They have also influenced the music of other countries. African music was brought to America through the transportation of slaves. The blues and rock music can trace it’s origins to the music in Africa. |
